How to clean climbing Mats
Climbing gyms are generally a dirty place. But we can improve the atmosphere by taking cleaning seriously and having a daily routine that eliminates the problem before it overwhelms.
Know your mat before you clean it
Climbing gym mats come in two main surface types. Each traps chalk differently and needs a different cleaning approach. Using the wrong method can damage the mat.

How often should you clean the climbing mats?
Chalk accumulates every session and falls onto the mats. Keeping them clean lets you dramatically improve the air quality of your gym.
Use the right tool for the right surface
The method matters as much as the frequency. Using a vacuum on a vinyl mat is fine but inefficient. Using a mop on a carpeted mat has no value and can damage it. Different surfaces, different tools.
For carpeted matsA damp mop picks up surface chalk from vinyl and laminate mats efficiently. Use a microfibre head, it traps chalk rather than pushing it around. After mopping, go over with a dry towel to remove any chalk residue and prevent white staining as the surface dries.
Add a small amount of diluted white vinegar to the mop water. Vinegar breaks down chalk residue more effectively than water alone and lifts the white haze that builds up over time. Follow with a light pass of soap and a damp cloth to remove the smell, then make sure the surface is completely dry before the next session.

Every day. Chalk accumulates with every session and does not go away on its own. A daily vacuum pass after closing — before the next session starts — keeps surface chalk from building into layers that are much harder to remove. Think of it the same way as sweeping a restaurant kitchen: you do it every night, not once a week.
For carpet mats, daily vacuuming handles what is loose on the surface. Embedded chalk requires a deeper clean every six months using wet extraction.
On vinyl and laminate mats, steam cleaning is generally safe and effective — the heat loosens chalk and kills bacteria and fungi on the surface. Check with your mat manufacturer first, as some PVC coatings can be affected by prolonged high-heat exposure.
On carpet mats, steam cleaning introduces moisture that can drive chalk deeper into the fibres and, if the mat does not dry fully, create conditions for mould growth in the foam. Wet extraction is the better method for carpet — it uses far less water and removes the moisture as it goes.
Cleaning removes physical material — chalk, skin cells, dirt, rubber particles. Disinfecting kills pathogens — bacteria, fungi, viruses — that can cause skin infections. Both matter, but they are different steps and neither replaces the other.
Clean first, then disinfect. Disinfectant sprayed onto a chalky surface cannot reach what it needs to kill. For disinfecting climbing mats, look for products safe for use on foam and fabric that are effective against common gym pathogens including ringworm (tinea) and staph. Many gyms disinfect monthly as part of the deeper clean cycle.
Easier overall. Liquid chalk produces far less airborne particulate than loose chalk — which means less settles on mats in the first place. The chalk that does end up on the mat tends to be in larger dried particles rather than fine dust, which vacuums up more readily.
The one trade-off is that liquid chalk can leave a slightly harder residue on vinyl surfaces compared to loose chalk dust, which may need a little more effort to wipe clean. On carpet, it is straightforwardly easier to manage.
The foam core is the key indicator. When a mat no longer springs back fully after compression — when you press it down and it stays down — the impact absorption it was designed to provide is compromised. This is a safety issue, not just a comfort one. Surface wear (carpet tearing, vinyl cracking, seam splits) is a cosmetic issue until it creates a trip or catch hazard, at which point it becomes a safety issue too.
Mats in high-traffic areas typically need foam replacement or full replacement every five to eight years, depending on use intensity. Regular annual inspections during the deep clean cycle are the best way to catch degradation before it becomes dangerous.
